For storage or transport purposes, you’ll also want to know the length of the ladder when fully retracted and folded. There are several measurements to consider when choosing a ladder. You can store your ladder by leaning it horizontally or vertically against a wall, but be sure it’s not extending into any area where it’s likely to be a tripping hazard. Store your ladder in a protected spot away from intense heat or freezing temperatures and where it won’t be subjected to excessive moisture or humidity. The Werner Fiberglass Podium Ladder (view at Lowe’s) is our top choice, thanks to its superb stability and ability to hold up to 300 pounds. If you really need to climb up high, however, you’ll like the Werner D6200 Fiberglass Ladder (view at Lowe’s), which stretches all the way up to 24 feet.
Louisville manufactures ladders for DeWalt, and Werner owns Green Bull and Keller. The Louisville and Werner brands are the most widely available, and in my experience they’re the most common on construction sites. Ladders are available in a variety of lengths, and a ladder that will work perfectly for one person might not get the job done for someone else. For this guide, particularly on our extension-ladder recommendation, we concentrated on the ladder needs of a typical two-story home with eaves approximately 19 to 20 feet off the ground. If that doesn’t describe your home, other ladders will work for you. It’s important to know how to choose a ladder so that you can select the best ladder for your needs. If the Gorilla is unavailable, we also like the Werner FS106 6 ft Type I Fiberglass Single Sided Stepladder. This traditional stepladder doesn’t have wide top steps but does offer a number of add-on accessories that we found to be useful, including a utility bucket, a tool hook, and a paint cup. For indoor work or lower-reach outdoor tasks, we recommend the Gorilla GLF-5X Fiberglass Hybrid Ladder. This stepladder is unique because the top two steps are considerably larger than the rest, so they support your entire foot and not just your arch.
In fact, I’ve spent quite a bit of time on this exact ladder. The feet of the D have nonslip textured rubber grips for use on hard, flat surfaces. When you set up the ladder on a lawn or other soft surface, you can pivot the feet so that the claw end faces downward, ready for you to dig it into the ground for a better grip. We found that both setups are successful and very stable. The utility bucket easily held a bottle of Windex, a roll of paper towels, a cordless drill, a prybar, a hammer, and a handful of small, easy-to-lose aluminum storm window screws. Lastly, the GLF-5X model’s tool tray is on the small side, and Gorilla does not offer any add-on accessories such as a utility bucket. We tested similar accessories from Werner and found them to be fantastic for a variety of projects. The Gorilla ladder does appear to be compatible with third-party items such as the Rack-A-Tiers Ladder Mate (which we haven’t tested). We’ve continued to use the Gorilla GLF-5X for a number of indoor and outdoor tasks, as well as through a small renovation.
The two ladders have the same weight rating, the same general build, and similar safety shoes. Like Werner, Louisville is a respected name in the ladder industry, and through my construction career I’ve stood on many Louisville Type IA ladders with complete confidence. Where the Werner model edges out the Louisville model is in its availability in stores. If you’re willing to sacrifice a little standing stability for working convenience, we also like the Werner FS106 6 ft Type I Fiberglass Single Sided Stepladder. This is a traditional stepladder without the Gorilla GLF-5X’s platform steps, which is a drawback. But to its advantage, the tool tray is compatible with a number of accessories that we found to be extremely helpful during our testing. The FS106 has excellent build quality, and in our tests it hardly wobbled at all, even while we stood on it and aggressively shifted our weight around. Together, a properly sized extension ladder and stepladder make a nice complementary pair.
The main benefit of fiberglass ladders is that they are sturdy and durable, with the drawback being that they are heavy. Safety is also a significant advantage that fiberglass ladders have as they are electrically insulated. Let’s get into what makes aluminum and fiberglass different and why one is better than the other. This guide will take you through the ins and outs of each ladder and describing the pros and cons of each. That way, you can choose which one is the best fit for you. Don’t use an extension ladder in high winds, severe storms, or when wet. You’ll want to choose a spot where it’s easy to access the ladder when needed, yet not in the way of other household items or passersby. Diversity is the name of the game with the Little Giant Velocity Ladder, which is designed for several different uses. You can expect to get a lot of use out of this ladder, but should keep in mind that it weighs a little on the heavy side, clocking in at nearly 40 pounds. The Werner FTP Tripod Step Ladder is a Type 1A ladder with 300-pound weight capacity and a single rear rail for set-up in areas with close quarters.

Reduced weight equals more payload capacity for equipment and water. There is less wear and tear on engine transmissions, brakes, and tires. This contributes to reduced maintenance costs and extends the service life of the apparatus. Aluminum resists corrosion and will not rust like steel. Aluminum doesn’t need to be painted, saving thousands of dollars in repaints over the lifespan of the aerial ladder. Alumninum ladder rungs are typically extruded for a permanent nonslip surface.

I loved using this so much I had to know where purchased and bought for my home even though I don’t have 50ft ceilings. The companies I worked for have had a no AL ladder policy. They tell me it is just easier than worrying about when aluminum ladders could or could not be used, having to stock both types etc. That being said, a lot of places still have house-rules that forbid aluminum ladders. I think that’s also because a damaged aluminum ladder can kink and fail much more suddenly than a damaged fiberglass ladder might. For any normal step or extension ladder I would only buy a non-conductive ladder. Note that I call them non conductive and not insulated. They are not designed to be insulators or personal protection against shocks only to not be conductive.
